Offensive line stability has long eluded the Steelers, and so far, this year has been no exception.
Despite investing heavily in the last two drafts at various spots along the offensive line, the team continues to struggle with consistency and continuity due to injuries and questionable performances.
As their season opener against the Atlanta Falcons looms near, there are question marks regarding who will be starting at right tackle. It is a conundrum involving 2023 first-round pick Broderick Jones.
In his Week 1 press conference, head coach Mike Tomlin did not do much to provide clarity as to which tackle will start on Sunday; rather, his comments regarding Jones have created more questions than answers.
"No, I haven't made any determinations regarding that," he told the media in attendance. "Obviously, he's worked a lot on the right. But again, we're gonna continue to watch that as we progress through the week because versatility has been an asset for him and us."
The other question is which side Jones would take if this were to happen? Jones, who has primarily played right tackle since his rookie season, has stated a preference for the left side, where veteran tackle Dan Moore Jr. presently plays. Though his position's versatility is valued, it has also caused misunderstanding, which they may not be able to clear up soon.
In general, the Steelers offensive line has been in flux following confirmation of veteran Isaac Semualo being sidelined with a pectoral injury. The only true certainty is at center, with rookie Zach Frazier and reliable veteran James Daniels at right guard. With a long season ahead, the hope is that the team becomes healthier and more stable as they look to compete in the jungle that is the AFC North.
