For senior safety Tyler Nubin, returning for one more season was not a hard decision to make, not just as a player but also as a student.
When he posted his decision to return on video last December, he made sure to recognize his fans, his team, and his academics. There are few college football players as well-rounded as Nubin, not just on the field but in the classroom. For the Minnesota Gophers heading into 2023, Nubin's maturity and leadership will be vital to their success in the Big Ten Conference.
Last season, Nubin set career highs in tackles (55), tackles for loss (2), interceptions (4), and passes defended (3). In the process, Nubin became a steady presence in the Gophers secondary and garnered national attention as one of the top players at his position.
Beyond his size and superb athleticism, Nubin's instincts and ball skills have evolved over time—a far cry from 2020, when he posted a Pro Football Focus grade of 45.6. This past season, Nubin registered an elite passer rating when targeted of 41.3.
Coming off a 9-4 season, there is no question Nubin and his Gophers have unfinished business. With his NFL dreams on hold, Nubin has the opportunity to help a promising team obtain something they have not had since 1967: a conference championship. With teams such as Michigan and Penn State in the mix, the road to their goal will be difficult. As long as they have Nubin on their team, their chances for success this season grow stronger.
