Steelers Scouts Have Prioritized Evaluating Quarterback Prospects

Since the beginning of the 2024 college football season, there has been a noticeable trend of the Steelers organization sending their scouts to evaluate quarterbacks.

In Week 1, Steelers scouts attended the Penn State vs. West Virginia game to watch quarterback Drew Allar, and the Colorado vs. North Dakota State game to see standout Shedeur Sanders. The team has taken a particular interest in Sanders, as they followed him again in Week 2 to watch him play against Colorado State.

This past weekend, team scouts traveled to Raymond James Stadium in South Florida to watch Cameron Ward of the Miami Hurricanes, who many consider to be the premier quarterback in college football and a top prospect in the upcoming NFL Draft. In total, the Steelers have evaluated six different quarterbacks:

  • Jalen Milroe - Alabama

  • Shedeur Sanders - Colorado (twice)

  • Quinn Ewers - Texas

  • Noah Fifita - Arizona

  • Cameron Ward - Miami

  • Drew Allar - Penn State

Though Justin Fields has proven to be a reliable quarterback after his first three games, the team will likely continue to add to their quarterback room, as Russell Wilson’s status beyond this season is very much in doubt. Depending on how Fields performs this season, this could determine how early the Steelers select a quarterback in the upcoming draft. The Steelers have also been active in scouting receivers, which could be a greater priority considering the minimal depth they have at that position.
