Steelers’ Ryam McCollum: From Practice Squad to Key Reserve Player

Prior to last season, Ryan McCollum's last start was with the Detroit Lions in 2021.

Over the next three seasons, McCollum experienced a series of changes: he was waived by the Lions, signed by the Pittsburgh Steelers, waived again, and subsequently re-signed to the Steelers' practice squad. This past season, however, McCollum finally had his time to shine when then-rookie center Zach Frazier sustained an ankle injury, sidelining him for two consecutive games.

McCollum made his season debut in Week 7 against the New York Jets, where he played a pivotal role in anchoring the offensive line. His efforts contributed to running back Najee Harris rushing for 102 yards and leading the team to a 37-15 victory. McCollum continued to impress the following week against the New York Giants, aiding Harris once more in achieving 114 rushing yards in their 26-18 win. Throughout those games, McCollum surrendered no sacks and allowed only four quarterback pressures.

For the season, McCollum played 154 offensive snaps, the most of his career. Although this may seem like a small sample size, he made the most of his opportunities and performed exceptionally well for a reserve lineman. Given the roster's limited depth behind Frazier, McCollum has quietly become one of the most important players on the team, and the Steelers can ill afford to lose him.
