Losing Diontae Johnson has presented many obstacles for the Steelers so far this offseason.
Despite selecting receiver Roman Wilson in this year's NFL Draft, the team has struggled to find a big-time playmaker to complement burgeoning star George Pickens. Despite being once one of the team's stronger units, it may now be their weakest entering into training camp this year.
Tyler Sullivan, NFL analyst for CBS Sports, ranked each receiver room into levels in his latest piece. Sullivan rated the Steelers' receivers in the lowest tier, known as the "developmental stage." In his analysis, Sullivan expresses worry about the team's depth beyond Pickens.
"The Steelers traded away Diontae Johnson but still have George Pickens as an up-and-coming third-year player. He already has a 1,000-yard season under his belt, but there are some questions beyond him on Pittsburgh's depth chart. Roman Wilson is an intriguing slot prospect after being selected in the third round out of Michigan but is currently an unknown at the NFL level. Meanwhile, Van Jefferson is on his third team in two seasons."
Though Jefferson received positive feedback throughout OTAs, he is over three years removed from the most productive season of his career, when he recorded 802 receiving yards on 50 receptions and six touchdowns. Since then, Jefferson has failed to match that level of output. Quez Watkins' greatest season with the Philadelphia Eagles was in 2021, when he had 647 receiving yards, 43 receptions, and one score.
Unfortunately for the Steelers, there are limited possibilities for adding a playmaking receiver. The squad has been linked to current 49ers receiver Brandon Aiyuk, but his team has shown little willingness to trade him, despite ongoing contract issues.
