In his first preseason game against the Houston Texans, rookie defensive back Ryan Watts accomplished a variety of things. Though most of it did not appear on the stat sheet, he made his presence known by his stature and ability to make plays. For this occasion, we'll show how the rookie from Texas became involved in the game.
Showing Some Ball Instincts
Watts is seen here as the strong safety on the right side. The one thing that stood out in this game was how he was continuously studying the quarterback before making a play. When the ball was snapped, watch how he kept his eyes on it throughout the procedure. Eventually, cornerback Anthony Averett deflects the ball, and Watts narrowly misses an interception. Throughout the game, Watts demonstrated a natural ballhawking instinct that almost paid off.
Near Interception
This particular play was prompted by a tip from defensive lineman Isaiah Loudermilk. Watts does an excellent job getting for the ball when it is in the air. Though he initially had the reception, the ball slid to the side before he fell on the ground. Overall, it was a solid effort that demonstrated his strong ball instincts.
Presence In Run Defense
Perhaps the most promising aspect of his performance against the Texans was his willingness to support the run. Watts finished the game with four total tackles and some great plays in the process, such as this example.
Here the Texans are showing a bunch formation on the left. Initially, Watts followed the two receivers motioning to the strong side, but once he saw one of the motioning right, he returned back and positioned himself as the right inside linebacker. When the ball snaps, Watts hits the gap but stays patient and waits for the Texans' running back to cut outside before making a beautiful tackle for no gain. Had he not made that tackle, it could have been costly for the Steelers defense.
Though it did not appear on the stat sheet, Watts was significantly involved in this game and showed minimal hesitation despite playing his first NFL game. Given that he was drafted in the seventh round, his performance may have gained the coach's attention and potentially put him in line to make the roster.
