The future of veteran quarterback Matthew Stafford with the Los Angeles Rams may not be as secure as many expected. With just two years remaining on his contract and a cap hit of $49.6 million next season, there’s a real chance the Rams might choose to head in a new direction this upcoming season.
In his latest piece for CBS Sports, NFL analyst Jordan Dajani highlighted the top landing spots for Matthew Stafford if his team decides to move on from him. Leading the list were the Pittsburgh Steelers, who are currently in a quarterback quandary with both Russell Wilson and Justin Fields. Dajani argued that this situation makes Stafford arguably their best option this offseason.
"The Steelers may be preparing for another reset of their quarterback room, as both Russell Wilson and Justin Fields are looking for new deals. Things aren't exactly peachy in Pittsburgh right now. No one cares that Mike Tomlin hasn't registered a losing season in 18 straight years with the Steelers, because Pittsburgh hasn't won a playoff game since 2016."
The team currently holds the 21st spot in the upcoming NFL Draft. Trading up to snag Cam Ward or Shedeur Sanders seems unlikely, as it would require giving up a significant amount of assets. Given their focus on upgrading the defensive line, this scenario is improbable.
Another option is Sam Darnold, who is expected to attract plenty of interest after a career year in 2024 with Minnesota. The Steelers’ last resort might be 41-year-old Aaron Rodgers, coming off a disappointing stint with the New York Jets, and possibly not a great fit for the team’s culture.
All signs point to the Steelers potentially signing either Wilson or Fields next season. However, if Stafford becomes available, he shouldn’t be overlooked as a viable option.
