The prevailing Brandon Aiyuk saga may have become more complicated with the news of Dallas Cowboys receiver Ceedee Lamb's hefty contract extension.
Even in the likelihood of Aiyuk being out of the price range for the San Francisco 49ers to re-sign him, the Steelers themselves are far off from satisfying Aiyuk's $30 million+ contract demands.
With the regular season starting in a little over a week, there is little reason to believe that the Steelers are close to acquiring Aiyuk. Another potential candidate the team might pursue is Houston Texans receiver John Metchie III.
According to NFL insider Jordan Schultz on Twitter, numerous teams have already showed interest in trading for Metchie III. Though the teams in question have not been identified, it is reasonable to infer that the Steelers were one of them given how well he played in the preseason.
As it stands, the crust of the talent lies with both George Pickens and Van Jefferson. Beyond these two is uncertainty surrounding players such as Calvin Austin III and rookie Roman Wilson, who is close to returning from an ankle injury he sustained during training camp in July.
Last season with the Texans, Metchie III registered 16 receptions for 158 yards after overcoming acute promyelocytic leukemia, which he was diagnosed with during his rookie season.
