Rookie Payton Wilson Is Quietly Making An Impact

Sometimes, numbers don't tell the whole story of a player's contributions on the field.

In his first five games, the young Steelers rookie out of NC State has shown a remarkable talent for chasing down ball carriers. Against the Dallas Cowboys this past Sunday, Wilson was everywhere, making plays all over the field. In one impressive sequence, he chased down running back Rico Dowdle Jr., shedding a block to make the stop for a small gain. He finished the game with nine tackles, five of them solo.

Though the splash plays have yet to come, Wilson is seemingly scratching the surface of his potential. His natural speed and instincts have already made him one of the most important players on a strong defensive unit. In their Week 4 loss to the Colts, Wilson led the team with five stops while registering no missed tackles, according to Pro Football Focus. Wilson currently sits 6th on the team in total tackles with 20.

Efficiency cannot always be measured. Yet, when it comes to Wilson, his ability to make and finish tackles as a rookie bodes well for his continued development. If what we have seen is just a sample of what’s to come, don't be surprised if he soon becomes a rising star.
