It is now becoming apparent that Steelers rookie linebacker Payton Wilson is coming into his own, as he continues to evolve with each game he plays.
In their Week 14 win over the Cleveland Browns, Payton played a major role on defense, registering four total tackles, including one for a loss. As he continues to trend upwards, Payton is receiving well-deserved attention from media pundits, including NFL writer and draft analyst Josh Edwards of CBS Sports.
In his latest rookie power rankings, Payton was listed at No. 7, but based on his performance this past Sunday, he could have been higher.
"Wilson nearly made the list a week ago when he forced a fumble against the Bengals. He has proven to have a well-rounded skill set next to Patrick Queen this season. He fits run gaps and picks up coverage leaks out of the backfield. His role has expanded due to injuries, and it is unlikely that he gives it up any time soon after the way he played against the Browns."
Wilson has proven to be an integral part of a defensive unit that currently ranks fifth in points allowed per game. In 13 games, he has accumulated 55 tackles, two tackles for loss, one interception, and a fumble returned for a touchdown in Week 13 against the Cincinnati Bengals.
