In what was labelled by both Pittsburgh Steelers GM Omar Khan and head coach Mike Tomlin as a 'deep draft', both Khan and Tomlin have been diligent throughout this process.
In their pre-draft press conference, Khan described how they have been utilizing video calls to meet with a larger-than-usual number of prospects this offseason.
"We spent a lot of time getting to know a lot of players not only on the field but off the field," he told the reporters in attendance. "Once the season ended, for me it started at the Hula Bowl – had the opportunity to interview several players there. Coach and I got to Mobile (Ala.), we probably interviewed 40 to 50 players formally and another, you know 20 To 30 players, probably more than that informally".
One thing is certain: the Steelers should have plenty of options to choose from with the 17th overall pick in this year's draft class. Considering they also hold the 32nd overall pick, one should expect other team to be in contact with them with potential deals, which should make for an eventful and exciting day.
"We've been talking about it. I think the thing that we're least familiar with is the amount of calls that we will be or could be getting. And that's where we spend our time. It's just talking about how do we organize, and how do we get prepared for receiving the amount of interest that pick could have and that's a good and exciting possibility for us."
The 2023 NFL Draft begins on Thursday, but expect both Tomlin and Khan to continue doing what they have done all offseason.
