The numbers may not tell the whole tale, but Steelers defensive lineman Keeanu Benton was one of the most impressive rookies from last year's draft class.
Benton did not play a large number of snaps last season, despite the absence of veteran defensive lineman Cam Heyward due to a major groin injury. Nonetheless, with the few snaps he was given, Benton made a strong impression. Last season, Benton made nine starts and played 484 defensive snaps. Benton finished with 36 tackles, a sack, two passes defensed, and eight quarterback hits.
Beyond these surface numbers, his pass-rush prowess is what makes him the type of player who could see a breakout season in 2024. According to Pro Football Focus, Benton registered an 82.6 pass-rush grade, placing him as the 20th-best defensive lineman. In addition, his 10.3% pressure rate was among the highest for players in his position.
With the inevitable increase in snaps this upcoming season, Benton's numbers and productivity should only increase. Whether it involves stopping the run and getting pressure in the backfield, his contributions should make him a vital piece of the defensive line this season and beyond.
