What is certain about Steelers cornerback Joey Porter Jr. is that he does not lack confidence.
After a solid rookie season, Porter Jr. looks to capitalize on it by establishing himself as one of the top cornerbacks in the NFL. However, if you were to ask Porter Jr. himself, he believes that he is already there.
In Bryan DeArdo's latest piece for CBS Sports, he revealed via The Athletic his belief that he is the top cornerback in the NFL. The reason for his belief stems from the work he did against some of the league's top receivers last season.
"Me for sure," Porter Jr. said via The Athletic." There are a lot of good DBs in this league, (but) nobody was doing what I was doing going against WR1s the entire year and locking him down. I don't care if I am mentioned in there or not because they are going to hear my name eventually."
Right now, it would be difficult to rank him higher than cornerback Ahmad "Sauce" Gardner, a two-time first-team All-Pro. As previously said, Porter Jr. assembled some noteworthy statistics that would support his claims. According to Pro Football Focus, he allowed the lowest completion percentage among cornerbacks with 50 or more targets last season, at 47.4%. His 18% forced incompletion rate also tied for the third-highest rate, and when targeted, he allowed a passer rating of 67.0.
