Jefferson’s Production Key To Steelers’ Success Against Chargers

When the Steelers signed veteran Van Jefferson this offseason, their goal was to secure both an inside and potentially an outside presence to complement receiver George Pickens.

After two games, however, Jefferson has not been much of a factor in either of their wins. Last week against the Denver Broncos, Jefferson had an eventful day, being on the receiving end of two pass interference calls: one he created and a questionable one that went against him. In the end, however, he finished the game with just 14 receiving yards.

As Arthur Smith’s offense prepares to take on the upstart Los Angeles Chargers, the team will need increased production from Jefferson, as the Chargers’ defense is likely to focus more on Pickens.

Even with the potential return of rookie Roman Wilson, Jefferson’s versatility to play both inside and outside could greatly benefit the offense against a Chargers secondary that includes All-Pro safety Derwin James Jr. and talented cornerback Elijah Molden

Although Jefferson is far removed from his breakout 2021 season, he still showcased glimpses of his playmaking abilities during the preseason. For the Steelers’ offense to advance to the next level, Jefferson will need to play a crucial role in making that happen.
