Is There Still Room For Montravius Adams on The Steelers Defensive Line?

Veteran Montravius Adams was once regarded as one of the most efficient interior defensive linemen in the NFL.

During the 2023 season, Adams led all defensive tackles in run-stop win rate at one point. Additionally, he ranked near the top among interior pass rushers, achieving the 20th-best pass rush win rate despite being one of the most double-teamed defensive linemen in the league. Heading into the 2024 season, Adams appeared poised to elevate his performance even further. However, a knee injury sustained in Week 7 against the New York Jets sidelined him until Week 15, when he returned for the matchup against the Philadelphia Eagles. Unfortunately, Adams was unable to recapture his stellar form from 2023.

In the offseason, the Steelers have made it a priority to restructure the interior of their defensive line. In addition to signing former New England Patriots defensive tackle Daniel Ekuale, the team anticipates the return of Isaiahh Loudermilk, last year’s rookie Logan Lee, and Keeanu Benton. Furthermore, the Steelers are likely to select a defensive tackle in this year’s Draft, which could potentially make Adams expendable.

If there is one factor that could secure Adams' roster spot, it is his versatility. Few defensive linemen can effectively play multiple positions along the defensive line, including nose tackle. However, his future with the team may ultimately depend on whether he can overcome last season's injury struggles and lack of production.

Adams' journey to securing a stable position on the roster begins with the upcoming training camp in July, provided he is not released beforehand. Maintaining good health and rediscovering the form that once made him an integral part of the Steelers' defense will be crucial to strengthening his chances of remaining on the team.
