Is Doug Nester A Roster Sleeper For The Steelers?

If there's one program that often gets overlooked for producing NFL-caliber offensive linemen, it's West Virginia.

In last year's NFL Draft, the Pittsburgh Steelers selected Mountaineers' center Zach Frazier in the second round. Not only did Frazier blossom into one of the top rookie offensive linemen in 2024, but one might also argue that he was among the top overall centers this past season. And the Steelers may have more than one Mountaineers gem on their offensive line roster.

Offensive tackle Doug Nester may have entered the NFL undrafted, but he was just as accomplished as Frazier during his collegiate career. In his true freshman year, Nester started 10 games at right guard and was selected as a College All-Freshman Honorable Mention by Pro Football Focus by the end of that season. By the time he reached his senior year in 2023, Nester had logged 41 career starts at right guard. That season was arguably his best, as he did not surrender a single sack on 660 offensive snaps, in addition to registering 30 knockdowns. Alongside Frazier, the Mountaineers' offensive line was one of the top units in the nation, ranking second for fewest sacks allowed.

One key aspect that should be noted is Nester's positional versatility, which is highly valued by the team. While most of his experience came as a guard, Nester, at 6'6", possesses the size and length to transition to tackle. Considering the possibility of the team moving on from long-time starter Dan Moore Jr., that could open the door for Nester to provide quality depth at that position.

Nester should not simply be viewed as Frazier's collegiate linemate, but rather as an accomplished lineman with the potential to be a significant asset to the Steelers' offensive line this upcoming season.
