With the NFL free agency period just around the corner, the pressure is mounting for the Pittsburgh Steelers to lock in their starting quarterback for the 2025 season.
Since the start of the off-season, speculation has been swirling about which direction the team will take. The general consensus has pointed to the Steelers bringing back either Russell Wilson or Justin Fields. However, despite reports of a divide among the Steelers' brass regarding which quarterback to retain, a recent report suggests that the team may have finally made their choice.
In his latest update for ESPN, NFL analyst Jeremy Fowler revealed that Justin Fields currently holds the edge over Russell Wilson. However, the possibility of bringing back the veteran quarterback should not be ruled out.
"The sense I get is that Justin Fields has an edge over Russell Wilson in Pittsburgh's free agent quarterback pecking order. There is sentiment for Fields in the building, and both sides would be open to a return. The Steelers have at least another week to crystallize those plans, and they certainly haven't ruled out Wilson at this point."
In addition to Fowler, Tony Pauline of Sportskeeda reported that the Steelers appear to be leaning toward moving forward with Fields over Wilson. That said, Fields seems to have several alternative options on the table, including the New York Jets and the Las Vegas Raiders.
What Fields has made crystal clear is that his return to the Steelers hinges on being named the team's undisputed starter. Last season, Fields kicked off the first six games of the 2024 campaign, posting a 4-2 record with 1,106 passing yards, 10 total touchdowns, and an impressive 65.8% completion rate.
