Versatility has always been a prized asset for the Pittsburgh Steelers, and it's one of the key reasons they signed offensive lineman Nate Herbig to a two-year contract back in March 2023. However, since his arrival, Herbig has been plagued by one major issue: availability.
Since joining the team, Herbig has appeared in 17 games with two starts, logging a total of 156 offensive snaps. This past season, Herbig landed on the team's injured reserve list after sustaining a season-ending torn rotator cuff. In his absence, players like center Ryan McCollum and Spencer Anderson have stepped up and played meaningful minutes. Given the Steelers' recent heavy investment in offensive linemen during the last two drafts, some might think that Herbig is becoming an afterthought.
With limited games and snaps under his belt, the question arises: Is it worthwhile to keep Herbig on the roster?
One reason to consider is the depth the team has at center behind Zach Frazier. Aside from McCollum, the team has little to no depth at that position. Before Frazier was drafted, Herbig was once seen as the team's potential starting center. While it's unlikely he'll reclaim that role with Frazier being the undisputed starter, Herbig can still provide valuable depth.
In addition to his potential at center, Herbig has significant experience as a guard. Currently, the team has veterans Isaac Seumalo and Mason McCormick occupying the starting spots. Beyond them, however, there is little depth, as Anderson struggled in a reserve role this past season.
If the Steelers decide to sign another offensive lineman or select one in the upcoming draft, it could signal the end of Herbig's tenure with the team. However, the market for offensive linemen this year is not particularly strong, which could ultimately pave the way for his return.
