There have been few positives with the Steelers offense so far this preseason, yet there is one receiver who has quietly emerged as the team's most reliable targets.
Receiver Desmond "Dez" Fitzpatrick has been able to carry over his impressive performance from training camp into the team's preseason games. Fitzpatrick had 32 receiving yards, which topped all pass catchers in their Saturday loss to the Buffalo Bills. After two games, Fitzpatrick has recorded 66 receiving yards on just three receptions, and an overall Pro Football Focus grade of 81.7.
For Fitzpatrick, it has been a long time coming. Since being signed in January 2023, he has been waived twice and promoted to active roster on one occasion. Much of his time with the organization has been spent on the practice squad.
Currently, the Steelers have dubious depth at receiver. Fitzpatrick's performance thus far suggests he has a chance of joining the active roster, while acquiring Brandon Aiyuk seems unlikely. Despite obstacles, he has proven himself worthy of a long-awaited opportunity.
