Darius Washington Is The Heart and Soul Of Florida State's Offense

Behind every successful offensive unit are the offensive linemen who anchor it.

In 2023, the Florida State Seminoles had one of the nation's best offensive units, averaging more than 34 points per game and scoring a total of 484. Overall, coach Michael Norvell's club was a force to be reckoned with on both sides of the ball, resulting in their most successful season since 2014.

If one were to pinpoint the true strength of their offensive line, one name comes to mind: Darius Washington.

Since coming to Florida State in 2019, Washington has accumulated 37 career starts at three different positions: right tackle, left tackle, and center. Despite some struggles in his first few years, Washington's progression and evolution have been evident as he has gotten better with each season. 2023 was his finest season to date, as he helped pave the way for running back Trey Benson and a Seminoles ground offense that averaged 162 rushing yards per game.

Washington established himself as one of the nation's most versatile linemen last season, starting eight games at left tackle and two at center. The biggest winner was quarterback Jordan Travis, who topped the ACC in passing efficiency and had minimal interceptions. Washington's overall numbers improved; he received an overall grade of 76.1 on 500+ snaps, according to Pro Football Focus.

Beyond the numbers, Washington's return gives the Seminoles offense a sense of continuity after losing key players such as the receiving duo of Keon Coleman and Johnny Wilson, as well as Travis and Benson, to this year's NFL draft. If the Seminoles look to replicate their success in 2023, it starts with the play of their most experienced player in the trenches. For Washington, there is still unfinished business for a team that missed last year's college football playoffs in controversial fashion.
