If there's one thing we learned about Beanie Bishop in his rookie season, it's that his playmaking abilities should never be ignored.
This past season saw Bishop start six of 17 games at the nickel position. Not only did Bishop perform at a high level, he exceeded expectations. In the Steelers' Week 7 win against the New York Jets, Bishop came up big, collecting two interceptions off quarterback Aaron Rodgers and recording a tackle for loss. Despite missing out on Defensive Player of the Week honors, the undrafted rookie was eventually named Defensive Rookie of the Month for October 2024.
The poor play of Cam Sutton following his return from suspension only accentuated the idea that the defensive secondary was far better when Bishop was on the field. In terms of coverage, Bishop was more than reliable. On 63 targets, Bishop allowed a completion percentage of 57.1 and a passer rating of just 59.5, the lowest among defensive backs on the team who faced 50 or more targets.
In addition to finishing second on the team in interceptions with four (as franchise rookie record), Bishop also finished second in interception yards with 46, and tied for third in pass deflections with seven. Regardless of his size, Bishop proved to be a difference-maker and made the Steelers' defense that much better.
After their lackluster performance during the latter part of the season and in the playoffs, the Steelers' secondary is due for a much-needed makeover. It's highly likely that veterans Damontae Kazee and Cam Sutton won't be brought back in 2025, opening the door for Bishop to become the team's full-time starter at nickel. Ultimately, Bishop should be the team's starter this upcoming season and perhaps beyond if all goes well.
