What better way for the Steelers to honor some of the greats on the 50th anniversary of their Super Bowl IX team than with a win.
After a rough first and mid-second quarter, the team settled down and executed effectively on both sides of the ball when it mattered. In the end, the Steelers secured an impressive 37-15 win over Aaron Rodgers and the New York Jets at Acrisure Stadium.
The biggest story of the game was veteran quarterback Russell Wilson, who faced scrutiny during the week for head coach Mike Tomlin's decision to start him over Justin Fields. Despite a shaky start, Wilson settled in and proved to be extremely efficient, completing several passes over 20 yards while effectively involving all key players. Wilson finished the game with 264 yards on 16 completions and three total touchdowns (two passing, one rushing)
Wilson's supporting cast showcased an equally impressive performance in this game. Running back Najee Harris recorded his second consecutive 100-yard rushing game, which included a touchdown late in the game. Receiver George Pickens delivered an exceptional performance, highlighted by a remarkable 44-yard reception. He concluded the game with 111 yards on just five receptions, including a touchdown. Tight ends Pat Freiermuth and Darnell Washington made significant contributions, combining for 87 receiving yards on six receptions. Lastly, receiver Van Jefferson recorded 15 receiving yards and scored his first touchdown of the season in the fourth quarter.
On defense, the Steelers had their fair share of struggles against Jets running back Breece Hall and receiver Garrett Wilson. In the end, rookie defensive back Beanie Bishop Jr.'s splash plays made the difference. Bishop Jr. registered two interceptions, one of which he took all the way to the Jets' goal line in the third quarter. The offense then capitalized with a touchdown.
On the defensive line, Larry Ogunjobi finished the game with a sack and two tackles, while Keeanu Benton registered two pass deflections and two tackles. Rookie linebacker Payton Wilson led the defense with 10 tackles, and safety DeShon Elliott continued his habit of making timely stops, finishing the game with six tackles.
