A long weather delay resulted in the game starting later than expected.
As sloppy as the field was at Acrisure Stadium following the rainstorm, so was the play of the Pittsburgh Steelers as they fell to the Dallas Cowboys. With the loss, the team falls to 3-2 to begin the season.
This marked the second straight game where the Steelers’ defense struggled on third downs. The Cowboys’ offense finished 7 for 12 on third down and successfully sustained long drives, led by quarterback Dak Prescott and running back Rico Dowdle. After the Steelers took the lead 17-13 late in the contest, Prescott and company put together a drive that lasted 16 plays for 65 yards, putting them ahead 20-17 with only 15 seconds remaining in the game.
Despite registering two interceptions, the Steelers’ defense allowed 445 total yards and nearly six yards per play. The only real bright spot on defense was All-Pro linebacker T.J. Watt, who recorded his 100th career sack on a shared sack with Nick Herbig in the first quarter. He finished the game with 1.5 sacks and eight tackles. Both cornerbacks Joey Porter Jr. and Donte Jackson each recorded an interception.
On offense, quarterback Justin Fields underwhelmed for the most part after an impressive performance last week against the Indianapolis Colts. He finished the game with 131 passing yards on 15 completions, but he did complete touchdown passes to tight ends Pat Freiermuth and Connor Heyward. On the ground, running back Najee Harris finished with just 42 rushing yards but led his team with 35 receiving yards. Backup Aaron Shampklin finished with just 14 rushing yards.
The Steelers travel next week to Las Vegas to face the Raiders.
