In essence, it was a game the Steelers had no business winning.
Despite trailing for most of the contest, they somehow managed to pull off a huge 28-27 road win over the Washington Commanders, improving their record to 7-2.
The Steelers started strong with a 7-play, 44-yard drive that culminated in a touchdown pass to George Pickens, giving them a 7-0 lead. After a botched punt fake attempt a few series later, the Commanders capitalized with a touchdown by Austin Ekeler to tie the game.
The Steelers retook the lead two series later with a 10-play, 80-yard drive, ending with a touchdown reception by tight end Pat Freiermuth, making it 14-7. After the Commanders cut the lead to four with a field goal, they took the lead on their next offensive drive, going up 17-14 late in the first half.
After surrendering another touchdown at the start of the third quarter, the Steelers cut the lead to three after a Najee Harris touchdown, closing the gap to 24-21. The Commanders extended their lead to six with a field goal late in the third quarter. The Steelers' offense faced several setbacks, including an interception late in the third quarter and a fumble at the Commanders' goal line by running back Jaylen Warren after a promising drive midway through the fourth quarter.
Then, in what was arguably the signature play for the Steelers this season, quarterback Russell Wilson connected with newly acquired receiver Mike Williams for a 32-yard touchdown on 3rd & 9. This play gave the Steelers the lead and ultimately won them the game.
For the Steelers, it was a collective effort against one of the best teams in the NFL. On offense, Wilson stayed composed despite struggling with consistency, finishing with 195 passing yards on 14 completions and three passing touchdowns. Leading the way for the Steelers' offense was receiver George Pickens, who finished with five receptions for 91 yards and a spectacular touchdown. The other standout was Williams, who, despite having only one reception, delivered the game-winning play.
On defense, veteran lineman Cameron Heyward was a disruptive presence, finishing with two sacks and a pass deflection. Linebacker Patrick Queen had a strong showing with seven tackles, two of them for a loss. Defensive back DeShon Elliott registered six tackles, two of them for a loss, while lineman Keeanu Benton contributed with a pass deflection and a tackle for loss.
