With the Steelers waiting a few hours before kickoff to confirm Justin Fields as their starting quarterback, one would have expected a sloppy affair on offense. On this day, we received just that as the team scrounged out a hard-fought 18-10 over the Atlanta Falcons in front of a capacity crowd at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.
The story of this game was the heroics of kicker Chris Boswell, who arguably put together the best performance career, scoring all of the Steelers 18 points, which included three field goals made from 50+ yards, a franchise first. Despite a shaky start, Fields settled himself and finished with 213 all-purpose yards (156 passing, 57 rushing). Receiver George Pickens led all pass catchers in the game with 85 yards on six receptions, while tight end Pat Freiermuth contributed 4 receptions for 27 receiving yards.
On the ground, running back Najee Harris led all rushers with 70 yards on 20 carries, with his longest being a 20-yard gain early in the fourth quarter.
On the defensive side, Teryl Austin's unit were their usual stout self, relegating the Falcons' offense to just 226 total yards and one touchdown. Leading the way was cornerback Donte Jackson, who was solid in his Steelers debut with two pass deflections and timely interception near the end of the contest. Alongside him was safety DeShon Elliott, who also finished with an interception and two pass deflections.
T.J. Watt, an All-Pro linebacker, led the defensive line with a sack, two quarterback hits, and a fumble recovery. Note tackle Montravius Adams also assisted a sack and three tackles. Finally, veteran defensive tackle Cameron Heyward had four stops, including one for a loss.
The biggest concern involves punter Cameron Johnston, who injured his leg late in the contest and was eventually carted off. Head coach Mike Tomlin confirmed that it was one of a serious nature.
Fields, despite being more of a game manager, gained strength as the game progressed. With Russell Wilson's availability in doubt, he might start next week against the Broncos in Denver.
