It's that time of year again. A day that Steelers fans have been anticipating since the NFL Draft in April.
On a beautiful Thursday morning in Latrobe, PA, the team began their first training camp session of the year. Perhaps to no one's surprise, rookie Payton Wilson was the first to onto the field, and others quickly followed.
Today's training camp storylines include a backup quarterback taking advantage of his opportunities, a defensive lineman with a strong day, and a tight end moving all over the place.
We're back Steelers fans, let's go!
Day 1 Injury Report
The most notable story surrounds quarterback Russell Wilson, who was seen on the field wearing a baseball cap and holding a play sheet. Head coach Mike Tomlin subsequently confirmed that Wilson was suffering from "calf tightness," which led to his choice not to participate. At this point, it is unclear whether this will impede his participation in tomorrow's session and beyond.

Steelers Camp Day 1 Recap
Fields Has Himself A Day -
With Wilson out, backup quarterback Justin Fields seized the opportunity and had a terrific day. During the 7-on-7 drill, he completed passes to tight end Pat Freiermuth and receiver Van Jefferson, for a big touchdown over cornerback Donte Jackson. He would also connect with receiver George Pickens during a later drill. Overall, it was a strong performance from a quarterback seeking to take the No. 1 slot.
Freiermuth Looked Efficient -
Arthur Smith's new offense appeared to benefit Freiermuth on this day, who caught almost everything that came his way. It's fascinating to note how Freiermuth was used in various alignments. Perhaps this is a preview of what to expect this season.
DeMarvin Leal Making An Impression -
For third-year defensive linebacker DeMarvin Leal, this year's training camp may be his last chance to be an impression with the team. On this day, he accounted for a would-be sack and pressures on Fields. Good start to Camp from Leal.
Up-and-Down Day For Donte -
Overall, cornerback Donte Jackson's first day included both good and negative moments. During the 7-on-7 exercise, he forced two incomplete passes against Pickens. However, later in the day, he surrendered a touchdown to receiver Van Jefferson due to falling in coverage. A few series later, he was beaten by Pickens.
