It would take nearly a decade to identify the last time the Steelers had the level of running back depth they do now.
With Najee Harris and Jaylen Warren well established as the team's one-two punch, the competition for the third running back place is quite open. La'Mical Perine, a former member of the Kansas City Chiefs, is thought to be the front-runner for this position. Then you have Jonathan Ward, an undrafted veteran who was signed by them during minicamp in May. Undrafted rookie Daijun Edwards is a player in this contest who may merit greater attention.
During his last two seasons with the Georgia Bulldogs, Edwards was regarded for his dual-threat abilities alongside former teammate Kendall Milton. In his junior year, Edwards accumulated 870 total yards and seven touchdowns. Last season, Edwards had 1,078 total yards and 13 touchdowns, which ranked fifth in the SEC and second on the team behind Milton.
Edwards brings a strong pedigree that has become synonimous with the Bulldogs' program under head coach Kirby Smart. With his diverse skillset, his ability to produce with his hands and legs could quickly make him a fan favorite during this year's training camp. Though many would expect him to eventually become an afterthought, one should not be surprised if he shows out in a similar way Warren did a few years ago.
